Our Roots

Founded August 4, 1974

In 1974, South County Day Care Center opened its doors to provide free child care for the children of migrant workers, who seasonally came to work in the area’s farms. The original location of South County Day Care was in the Presbyterian Church in Jamesburg, New Jersey. Each year the farms became increasingly mechanized, and each year fewer farm workers and their families came into the area.

Recognizing a growing community need for child care for children from families other than migrant workers, a group of area citizens decided to pool their efforts to keep South County Day Care open. These individuals formed a board and reorganized the center’s operations.

In 2004, the Presbyterian Church of Jamesburg underwent extensive renovations and South County Day Care relocated to nearby St. George’s Anglican Church. South County Day Care continues to recognize the positive value of diversity and dignity of all people. The Center promotes and strongly supports this policy throughout its service delivery practices.
